Taking The Car Abroad?

In the current economic climate many more people are attempting to save money and lower their carbon footprint by taking there cars abroad instead of using air travel.

This is a great idea and a really enjoyable holiday as long as you remember that different rules and laws apply when driving in a foreign country. For example many countries in the EU require you to carry a warning breakdown triangle in the car at all times whilst in other countries it can be compulsory to have a first aid kit. The more prepared you are, the better equipped you will be to handle the situation. Before travelling abroad it is always best to check the laws for all the countries you will be passing through and to make sure that you have the right cover with your insurance company.

Most important to organise in plenty of time for your trip if you are not the registered keeper and so do not hold the original vehicle registration document (e.g. it is on contract hire and registered to the finance company) is a VE103 Vehicle On Hire Certificate.  This document is your proof that permission has been given to take the vehicle abroad and was introduced in a bid to reduce the number of stolen vehicles crossing foreign borders and must be produced if requested by local law enforcement.  The certificates which are normally valid for 12 months can be obtained from the finance company who will arrange for it to be issued for a nominal fee.

If you want any help or advice relating to your trip and want to know how to obtain your Vehicle On Hire Certificate please contact our customer service team who will be able to help you.
